Great food finds and Gower packing

I’m busy packing for my Gower marathon adventure right now after a shopping trip in Tesco.  There are 21 of us from our running club heading over at some point tomorrow to stay in three little cottages right next to each other ready for the races on Saturday morning.  All of us are running either the 10k, half marathon, marathon or ultra distances.  I’ve not run any of the Endurance Life events before but several of the club have been to Gower in previous years and it’s always looked like fun!  Our house of eight has split the costs up and I am providing Sunday morning breakfast for all,.  So after a trip to the opticians and a drive in to school I was Tesco bound to stock up on sausages, bacon, bagels and Nutella (amongst other goodies).

Whilst picking out some tomatoes for a Sunday morning fry-up I spotted that Tesco have started doing ‘5 A Day Platters’.  What a good idea.  I know so many people that say they can’t fit five portions of fruit and vegetables into their days.  Rubbish.  It’s easy when you think about it.  I actually once sat through an assembly where the Headteacher told children from ages 4-16 that it was ‘really hard and expensive to eat five portions each day and there was no way anyone could do it every week’.  (This annoyed me a huge amount.)  These little packs are a great idea and a great reminder to keep on top of the fresh produce you eat (all you need to know about packaging is at http://rtgpkg.com/ilpra-tray-sealers/).

5 a day platter from Tesco Another great spot today at Tesco were these little GU pots.  I’m in love with anything salted caramel right now.  Everything’s fine in moderation right?!  Although I would never have paid £3.65 for two little puds, at £1.08 for two Dan and I have a tasty treat for dessert at tea tonight!
GU puds Everything about them looks delicious!GU pudsMy last find of the day was actually from Wilkinsons when I nipped in to pick up some Christmas chocolate coins for the kids at school and came across these tiny little bags of Penn State Pretzels.

Penn State PretzelsYou can see just how small they are next to my phone!  These pretzels have become part of my routine food intake during long distance runs this year getting me through all four of my ultra events in 2014.  The bags they normally come in are massive share bags which means I normally end up decanting the pretzels out into several little freezer bags and storing them in my coat pockets.  These size bags are perfect to stack everywhere without mess or fear of water getting in and making the pretzels all soggy.  I bought several ready for the marathon on Saturday.

Tomorrow will be a rushed day.  Up at 5:30am, teaching all day until 3pm when I shall rush home to be picked up by another runner at 3:30pm and chauffeured the 224 mile (or four hour) drive to the other side of the country.  And then, our adventure will begin…!

  1. I am a BIG fan of the reduced aisle section. I will buy fruits and veggies from there quite often. Score on the GU pudding – it looks AMAZING. Too small though 😉
    It is ridiculous when people make outlandish claims that it is hard to meet your 5 day quota. Ludicrous. Probably the same people who say they don’t have time to exercise. 20 minutes, seriously? What do you do in an evening? Watch Eastenders? There we go.
    Whew, and I’m calm again.
    The cottage idea sounds brilliant – way to make a proper event out of it (not that it’s not an event in itself!) Good luck :)

    1. The GU pud was amazing, pretty sickly though. You’d do well to eat any more!
      It does seem to be exactly the same people that claim they have no time to exercise…it does really wind me up.

  2. That teacher must have been an absolute idiot. Even if that’s your (incorrect) opinion, then why inflict it on kids, who struggle at the best of times these days with eating healthily!?!? I was a chubby kid, and that kind of ‘advice’ would have made me even more disillusioned about being able to lose weight…though my Mum fed me very healthy food and I usually managed 5 a day.

    At present, I think I’m closer to 12+ a day :) The portions are really small as well! I never realised a portion of veggies in particular was supposed to be so small. I’m used to my gigantic salads and I don’t think small amounts like that would cut it 😉

    I live in the reduced aisle. Seriously, I get SO many bargains in terms of fruit and veg it’s insane. Supermarkets are crazy for selling off ripe fruit so cheaply, particularly bananas. They’re not designed to be eaten when they’re green or just barely yellow! Not that I’m complaining: more spotty, sweet, gorgeous bananas for me 😀

    Good luck with the marathon! The course looks like a toughie for sure – I bet it will be an incredible experience though.

    1. I agree completely. That opinion should not be inflicted on the kids. Save it for the staffroom…where I could have put him right on his facts! I’m nowhere near twelve a day but I vary between 5-9 probably most days. I just love my veg!
      The marathon was definitely an incredible experience! It’s a shame the Endurance Life events are so much money because I loved the race and the challenge it gave me. I left Gower feeling really inspired to improve my running again.

      I’m not quite up to ten a day but I’m normally well over my five a day…and I’m sure I would eat plenty more if Dan ate more than just peas and carrots! Awkward husband!

  3. I would have been fuming in that assembly- what a poor message, and incorrect too.
    I love those little pots- mainly because you get to keep the dish after! Loads of them aren’t veggie though- that has caught me out before :(

    1. I was fuming. Unfortunately I couldn’t really step up and argue the point during the assembly, so kids left with the wrong message about healthy living. :(
      We’ve kept the pudding dishes, which are very cute and I’m planning on using them as regular dessert pots now.

    1. The reduced aisle is great for trying new stuff! Although sometimes it’s really disappointing when you fall in love with something that’s normally so pricey!
