Testing out the Shires and Spires course

Next Sunday I shall be running the Shires and Spires 35mile ultra for the third year in a row.

Shires and Spires was my first ultra back in 2013 and I enjoyed the course, the self navigation, the distance, the whole ultra experience so much that I signed up for a few more ultras afterwards, ran it again the following year and then doubled the distance not long after(!)

Shires and Spires 35I was back to run the course for a second time in 2014, this time with a big crowd of club runners, – but I got bad sunstroke and really didn’t feel very well at all whilst out on the course, or afterwards.  (Still managed to enjoy the ice lolly we picked up from the shops at mile 20 though!)

Shires and Spires eating Calippos!This year I would like to achieve a new PB.  In 2013 I trotted in after 7hours 56minutes and 52seconds out on the course.  Last year I stumbled over the line in 8:40:22.

Looking back after the event in 2014 I found that I learnt three important things:

* Running with others does not always work for me – I’m usually the slowest of the bunch and rather than letting my head switch off and going into autopilot at my own pace I often end up running at the same speed as the other runners, gradually getting quicker and quicker from the pace I originally set out to run and therefore becoming more and more stressed out.  Eventually I burn out and my body gives up on me.

* I need to cover my head whilst out on a sunny day – At both Milton Keynes Marathon and Shires and Spires last year I came away with horrific sunburn along the parting on my head.  The burns scabbed over within a couple of days but were then sore for weeks afterwards.  I’ve since worn a cap for most of my long runs and felt much better for doing so.

* I need to trickle feed during the run consistently from the very beginning – I think that probably some of this knowledge came from the Conti Run.  I was really stupid last May and despite running 70k on the hot, offroad course, I took on barely any fuel at all and was left feeling very weak and dizzy.  It took me a while to regain the 10+lbs that I lost that day.

So, with that knowledge behind me, and a long run very overdue, on Saturday I headed out with nine others from club to recce the first 20 miles of the Shires and Spires course.  I’ve run the course several times now, having also completed recce runs both years that I raced it, so I’m not concerned about getting lost out there on the day.  Miles in the legs were necessary though and it felt good to slip in another 20 yesterday after a few weeks of much smaller ‘long’ runs.  (All pics stolen from Kev.  :)  )Recce of the Shires and Spires courseI made sure to fuel up with a couple of nakd bars (Three for two in Tesco!) and of course some of my favourite pretzels!

We set off from the pub opposite Lamport Hall a little after 8am and the weather was perfect for a long run – bright, but breezy and not too warm.  If only I knew the conditions were going to be the same next week.  I don’t hold out much hope for that…I appear to be jinxed for weather on race days!  I’ve already heard reports that the first weekend in June is going to be the hottest the UK has had in a while.  :(

Recce of the Shires and Spires courseWe took things at a nice steady pace out there on Saturday.  As is often the case, I was the slowest runner of the bunch but I never felt like I was pushing hard to keep up with everyone.  It took us 4 hours and 15 minutes to run the first twenty miles, sitting at just over a 13minute mile pace.  This included a ten minute stop at the shop for more water though and I walked much slower with the group up the hills than I would have done had I been on my own.  It’s pretty hilly out there on the course.  Ideally I’d like to sit just under 13 minute miles on the day but the weather could change all plans!Recce of the Shires and Spires courseWhen we reached Long Buckby at 20 miles we stopped to refuel at a little cafe and within 15 minutes, fifteen more club runners had arrived ready to run the second half of the course, led by Kev, who continued to run the whole route.

My legs still felt pretty good and I was confident that I could have continued had I wanted to, so that fills me with a bit of hope for next weekend at least!

  1. A great post! I don’t tend to recce at the moment as my training plan calls for minimal distance and I often sign up for non-local races. I can definitely see the benefit of doing so though, so as I start to take on trickier courses with self navigation then I will probably look at recceing the tricky bits.

  2. I always love seeing your photos of the Shires course. I have so many memories from that race in 2013…all of them positive :)

    I don’t really live near enough to many race courses to run them outside of racing conditions, and the ones I do live close to are all on roads closed only for the race. I don’t think I’d be too popular with local drivers if I decided to run on them during the rush hour 😉

    It does look like it’s going to be a hot one next week (again!) I hope your race strategy proves effective and you have a great day.

    1. I do love the Shires course, and I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as you did as well. I can’t believe it was two years ago now that you came down to run it! I’ve resigned myself to the fact that it is going to be hot again this year but I’m crossing my fingers that the heat doesn’t become too much on Sunday.

  3. Sounds like such a lovely and relaxed 20 miler. A lot of my club and I are doing the Bournemouth marathon and I can’t wait to train with them. I’ve done the majority of my running and training for Liverpool marathon on my own (mainly because I wanted to listen to my body and also because after April non one was doing any marathons) so it’ll be great to have some company and relax a bit with it. Not be so worried about sticking to paces or miles as much, but still being sensible. Most of the people will be a bit slower than me so it will keep my pace under control as well.
    I don’t tend to run race routes before a race…mainly because I quite enjoy the novelty of the race itself. Though if I know it’s going to be off-road or trail I’ll try and do some similar training to get used to it.

    1. I love that you already have your next marathon booked in! I think Bournemouth falls the same week as Mablethorpe this year, as well as Chester, so social media will be busy that weekend!
      Sounds like you are being sensible sticking with runners slightly slower so that you don’t get carried away with your long runs. At our club we call them LCRs – long chatty runs! If you can chat the whole way, you’re running at the right speed!

  4. I think you maybe lucky with the weather as it doesn’t look like it’s going to be as hot as they said it would be. It looks like a pretty route, a bit long for me though, about 33 miles too long.

    1. Haha! Someone at club said almost exactly the same thing to me last night! Just 30 miles too long for them! It is an incredibly pretty route and worth heading over to walk if you are a walker at all. There are some lovely views out that way.

  5. I know what you mean about burning your parting- I try to put suncream on my parting now because I used to get it a lot- even on holiday. I hate wearing a baseball hat as my head gets so sweaty, so I have a sun visor thing to shield my face, but of course that doesn’t help with protecting my scalp. Or I pin back by hair, as it is thick enough to cover it.
    It sounds like such a lovely run- I have a couple of running friends and they keep inviting me to their midweek runs, but they run slightly faster than me, and I know they would wait, or slow down, but I feel the pressure a bit so have not gone with them yet. But they do stop and chat, and run through fields and things, so I am more and more tempted.
    I don’t think I have ever run a race course before the race, mainly because I am not good at map reading so would probably get lost. Plus, I like to not really know, in case it’s worse than I thought!

    1. I’ve found a Ronhill running cap (light material and extra slots for cooling!) makes my head not quite as sweaty.
      I know what you mean about sometimes not wanting to know about the race in case it’s worse that you thought!
